The Bełchatów Lignite Mine

The Bełchatów Lignite Mine is the largest opencast mine in Poland and one of the largest in Europe. Currently the Bełchatów mine extracts about 33 million tonnes of coal a year, which accounts for over 50% of the country's annual output of this energy resource.

The mine is enormous, but the biggest impression is made by the Bagger 288 excavator (Excavator 288). The excavator is about 240 metres long and 96 metres tall. It's a truly enormous beast, which digs through the night as well. In a single working day it can dig a pit the size of a football pitch, 30 metres deep.
