Gajówka Settling Pond – the Azure Lake
One of the nicer bodies of water with wonderful water colours is Zakrzówek. Another such colourful body of water that I know is the Gajówka Settling Pond in the Przykona commune. Called by
The reservoir was formed by flooding the former workings of the Adamów S.A. Lignite Mine with water, and to this day it's used as a dump for ash and slag. The high content of calcium carbonate in the slurry makes the water take on a gorgeous azure colour.
The water in the reservoir is strongly alkaline (pH about 12), which is why bathing in the water is forbidden. The terrain around it is very dangerous, boggy and unstable. It's very easy to sink into the mud or literally get stuck there.
In the northern part of the body of water, a viewpoint was created (115 m above sea level), which gives a chance to see a panorama of the whole Azure Lake. I warmly recommend heading there.
