The Marble Island of Naxos
The next island after Milos was the largest island in the Cyclades archipelago — Naxos (Greek: Νάξος). The coast on the eastern side of Naxos is very steep and cliffy, in contrast to its western shore.
The island is home to about 18,000 inhabitants, who cultivate grain, grapevines, citrus and olives. Some of them are engaged in raising sheep and goats and in fishing.
A granite mountain chain runs across the island. Its highest peak is Oxia — 1,001 m. Marble is quarried in the mountains. Work on extracting it began as early as the 3rd millennium BC. Stone figures of deities were made from it.
According to Greek mythology, it was on the island of Naxos that Theseus abandoned Ariadne. Maybe she's still there?
